Congratulations to Mark Rylance on his winning a Tony Award for his performance of Olivia in Twelfth Night!
It his third Tony Award.
I saw this production in New York City last year (here is my review) and it was brilliant.
Jenny Tiramani also won for Best Costume Design, which isn't a surprise at all. Not only were the costumes excellent, as you enter the theatre you get to see the cast changing into their costumes, and being helped into them. It shows you how difficult and intricate the costumes are to put on and wear.
Sadly, the play did not win for Best Revival nor did it win for Best Director.
But it garnered several other nominations in the acting categories. Not only was Mr. Rylance nominated for his performance of Richard III, but Samuel Barnett, Paul Chahidi and Stephen Fry were also nominated for their fantastic performances in Twelfth Night.
If you did not see the original production of Twelfth Night in London, or later in New York City, it is available on DVD from Shakespeare's Globe in London.
And don't worry, it is All Regions, so it will play on any DVD machine.
I can't recommend the play highly enough. It is hilarious and it may very well be the best Twelfth Night ever staged.
